The Asian People’s Land Rights Tribunal (16-17 January 2014)

At the Asian People’s Land Rights Tribunal last 16-17 January 2014 held in the University of the Philippines – Diliman, four cases of land grabbing were presented to the panel, two coming from the Philippines, one from Cambodia and another from Indonesia.

One of the cases in the Philippines include the exploration of gold, nickel and gold-nickel in Agusan del Norte threatening the ancestral domain of the Mamanwa indigenous group and the key biodiversity area surrounding Lake Mainit. As rains battered Northeastern Mindanao the past days and communities were inundated by water coming from the overflowed lake, the people were reminded of the real threat posed by mining operations in case the government grants Mindoro Resources Limited the permit to operate.
